Interview with a Boudoir Photographer: Allana Taranto

Allana Taranto is a Boston-based boudoir photographer and the owner of Modern Muses. Allana is a champion of the body-positive, and the sex-positive movement. Her photography is elegant, beautiful, thought-provoking, and empowering. Get to know this talented photographer and the philosophy behind her style in our interview.
How did your career as a photographer begin?
At first, I wanted to be a filmmaker! But I took a still photography class, and I was hooked. Many years later, I still love storytelling with still images. I studied photography and media studies and went on to get a graduate degree in art education. I taught for a while before going full time as a photographer.
What was the first camera you ever owned?
Pentax K1000! - fully manual and analog. :)
What do you enjoy most about boudoir photography?
Meeting people and guiding them to a place where they feel strong and beautiful when they see themselves in their images.
How do you make your subjects feel comfortable in front of the camera?
Listening and talking before the camera comes out. It all starts with building a relationship. Building trust. Building an authentic connection.
What are some classic accessories that complement a boudoir photography shoot?

What do you try to avoid saying at a boudoir photoshoot?
We already have negative self-talk going in our internal dialogue all the time, so I make sure that the words and the experience people have in the studio is positive and reinforcing and affirming who they are.
What’s the number one piece of advice for women who are about to star in their boudoir photography session for the first time?
