Thigh highs and pantyhose are from the same family – hosiery. For this reason, they appear similar, but like many siblings, they also differ in several important ways. To start with the similarities, both are crafted from similar material and designed to be perfectly form-fitting.

And we'd argue the significant similarities end there.

At VienneMilano, we're team thigh highs. But, in the spirit of fairness, we’re going to compare both garments objectively (or to highlight thigh highs’ obvious winning advantage!)

What makes thigh highs great?

Golden era association

To this day, the mere mention of thigh highs can conjure images of Rita Hayworth, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, and Vivien Leigh. The glamour, allure, mystique, and magic of this bygone era still infuse every pair of thigh highs with a classically chic sheen.

We are in the era of comeback eras. So, if you thought the above point was off-putting, worry not. Thigh highs have shone again in modern-day "TikTok" styles, meaning the younger generations have discovered the glory of thigh highs, ensuring their place on the trendy list for years to come. And Kourtney Kardashian is a huge fan – need we say more?

A powerful secret & doubling up as lingerie

Being the only person who knows you’re wearing thigh highs can be surprisingly empowering. And wearing them for that someone special can be all the better! Thigh highs from a feminine factor and sultriness that pantyhose simply don’t have.

Flattering for all

Thigh highs are generally more accommodating to the natural day-to-day changes in our bodies. When those bloated days inevitably roll around, you won’t have to worry about being reminded of it all day. They’re also easier to adjust than pantyhose, making them all-around the more forgiving garment.

Offers Superior Comfort

As for the practical side, thigh-high stockings are more comfortable to wear all day than pantyhose since a waistband isn’t cutting into your middle. In addition, thigh highs are not restrictive. You can say goodbye to feeling pinched around the waist and pesky red lines after a long day of pantyhose-wearing. What’s more, thigh highs completely free up your waistband/crotch area, meaning you can wear figure-hugging outfits without fear of bumps or outlines under your clothes. They also make it easier to use the restroom because you don’t have to take them off.

The flaws:

However, for all the many luxuries of thigh highs, you will likely have to delve out a little extra cash (but not always!) And that's about it.

And pantyhose?

Pantyhose are by far the broadest category when it comes to hosiery.

Shiny tights

The flaws:

While nylon may look and feel fine, it is a material that doesn't breathe. This means heat and dampness get trapped inside, creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. This means pantyhose can put women at risk of yeast infections and UTIs, whereas the same problem doesn't arise with thigh highs.

Are thigh highs better than pantyhose?

Of course, your hosiery choice will always depend on the look you're trying to achieve, how you want to feel, and where you're going. However, we can't help but notice that thigh highs not only win out in terms of practicality, durability, and comfort, but they also come with a stylish edge.

Pantyhose and thigh high stockings are both fantastic – there's no doubt about that. But at VienneMilano, our lovely thigh highs hold a special place in our hearts. So, we're unsurprised by the outcome of this competition! If you'd like to celebrate thigh high stockings' triumph with us, why not claim one (or many more!) from our collection of these champion garments as your own? They’re clear winners!
