At VienneMilano, we encourage all women to feel confident and comfortable. Our thigh highs are made with you and your legs in mind. Color blocking allows you to reveal your confidence by using your legs as a canvas. Combine your passion for color and for luxury hosiery this season and add a little pep to your step — and your outfit!

As we move into spring, color blocking is emerging as a top trend. Color blocking is done by taking colors that are opposites on the color wheel and putting them together, to make a provocative and attention drawing outfit. Started by Yves St. Laurent in the 1940s, color blocking was groundbreaking but seen more as art than fashion. The term "color blocking" arose from YSL's application of the Modernist art movement in his clothing due to the placement of squares in solid colors next to each other. Throughout the ‘50s women started to color block, but timidly so. However, as freedom of expression rose to the forefront of the younger generation in the ‘60s and ‘70s, color blocking made an appearance in a big way, for women of any age. Now, in 2018, color blocking is back and ready to be reimagined.

Yves St. Laurents' iconic dress from 1965-66 inspired by Mondrian's art work.

Before YSL made his iconic dress, he studied Piet Mondrian's for inspiration. One of the most influential artists in the 20th century, Mondrian was an abstract artist that mainly focused on using geometric shapes (blocks) to create incredible and thought provoking paintings. He desired to comment on aesthetics as well as universal values, and did so beautifully. He chose to only work with the three primary colors, red, yellow, and blue, and the three primary values, black, grey, and white. Within the art community to this day, his name is synonymous with Modernism.

As much as we love our classic black thigh highs, we cannot resist taking advantage of all the colors available to us through the Vanna collection, as well as others. It can be difficult to put together two colors you might not initially think to combine, but once you get the hang of it, you will be doing it all the time!

How To Color Block

To create the perfect color blocked outfit, reference a color wheel first. Pick what color combination you want to try and then find the pieces for the outfit—do not forget to include a pair of our colorful thigh highs for the final touch! Remember, there is no shame in bringing color to the workplace -- pair our olive green thigh highs with a soft pink work appropriate dress for an eye-drawing statement that is totally professional. Color blocking is great for any occasion and keeps your look interesting and fresh. Do not be afraid to try this trend in the winter either; by using darker shades of any color you can alter an outfit to fit any and all seasons.

Be careful not to overdo it, though. If you are going to mix two bold colors together, try to make sure they are not both bright and vibrant; rather, choose one to accent the other that brightens the outfit. Of course it depends -- if you are going out with friends on the town surely you can wear more daring hues and look absolutely fantastic, but if you are going to work, you likely want to opt for a more toned down outfit. Additionally, it is not just about the articles of clothing, but accessories! Try complementing your color blocked outfit with matching earrings or a handbag.

Just like Yves St. Laurent participated in the Modernist movement, you can too. Be inspired by these artists to match colors that you might not have in the past, make this trend yours!
