The many Valentine's day origin stories
V-day, much like most other special days, has a past shrouded in mystery. And like any confusion, it's usually caused by everyone having a widely different version of events.For the sake of clarity, we'll take a peek at each Valentine origin story, beginning with the three saint Valentine's themselves. Given the rosy, lovey-dovey vibes of our modern-day love celebration, you may be surprised to hear that all three Valentine's day saints were martyred, each in their own unique lovelorn way.
The first (but not last) Valentine
To begin with, in the 3rd century CE, the setting is the Roman Empire, and we have Valentine no.1 going up against emperor Claudius II. According to the emperor, unmarried men made much better soldiers. So, he banned marriage among his ranks. Valentine, a devote Christian believing marriage to be sacred, wasn't having any of that. Instead, he essentially started his own marriage black market (without the profit!) It wasn't long before he was unfortunately put to death.
The second Valentine
Another Valentine was also hopelessly dedicated to the cause of love. He fought valiantly to free Christian prisoners from Roman prisons he'd eventually find himself thrown into. There, as legend has it, he fell in love with his jailor's daughter. She would visit him in secret, and their exchange of letters was frequent. Valentine's supposed sign-off of choice? "Your Valentine."It's all apocryphal, of course.
Pagan roots?
A more realistic origin story is that of the Pagan festival of ‘Lupercalia,' A fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. A crowd would gather in the cave where Romulus and Remus were believed to have been nursed by a she-wolf (Lupa.") There, a goat hide would be processed until suitable to be taken to the streets, used for gently slapping both women and crop fields (yes, you read that right.) A slightly more plausible theory: In 15th century France and England, it was commonly believed that February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season – lovely.Which leads us into …
